I am nearing the end of my 2 month trip to Australia. To many people this was a crazy decision, to go abroad to get my head back in the game after 10 years of working a high stress job and burning out faster than a comet in the sky.
I decided to do what was best for me in this moment in time. If I waited until everything was paid off I would never have gone and done what was best for me. There are a number of lessons that I’ve learned from 3 years of blogging about money:
- I’m a badass
- I can do anything that I put my mind to
- I am a side hustling queen
- I am a debt repaying machine
- I can make money from anywhere. I just have to hustle.
These are the life lessons that I had to learn. So, when I decided to quit my job and do what was best for me, I knew that people would be questioning my sanity. Trust me I was.
So, when I went abroad I was armed with a plan. Because I do have to pay off debt, and need money to eat. Let’s be real.
Working abroad posed some challenges specifically:
- Australia is 17 hours (give or take) ahead of most of the people that I’m trying to work with.
- Internet Connectivity-Is not as readily available as you would expect. And I had to figure out ways to use the internet that I don’t have to consider at home.
- I had to balance fun with productivity
How DId I Meet These Challenges?
- I made sure to communicate that I was overseas when making pitches. When I get to Hawaii I will be contacting individuals who have connected with me and are aware that I’m traveling. They were very gracious and I look forward to working with them
- Libraries RULE! I love libraries and thank goodness the Sydney and Melbourne libraries were accessible to everyone. I was able to get out of the hostels/friend’s house and sit down for hours on relatively fast internet networks and get some work done by going to the library
- I created a work/fun schedule-I basically alternated days for fun and days for work. This was very helpful because I was able to focus 100% on whatever activity I was participating in.
Set A Monetary Goal:
- I set an earnings goal and am proud to say that I was $40 dollars over my set goal for January. I’m not sure how February will go. I am flying on February 17th and that will be a 10 hour trip, then a week later for a 5 hour trip. Given the time change and the lost time that will affect my productivity.
Setting Up Side Hustles For When I Return:
- I’ve already begun setting up side hustles upon my return to the States. I’m hoping to do something when I’m in Hawaii (something fun)
- I’ve already set up something in for the week that I return to Denver.
So when you ask me about Working From Abroad-How is It Going? I have to say that it is going really well and I’m glad that I pushed myself in the way that I did.

It sounds like you’re very organised with your time and it’s working out for you. I don’t think you made a crazy decision at all! You rock!

Thanks Laura! I’ll be eating lentil soup for most of March as I get things organized but I think things will be ok!

That’s so awesome that you’ve been able to make it all work from around the world. “I’m a badass” – love it!

I can relate to you about the somewhat difficult access to reliable high speed internet as I am wind my way through the UK. I definitely make the most of the good access I can find along the way when it comes to work. Safe travels back to Hawaii my friend and talk to you soon!
Michelle says
Thanks Kassandra!! The connectivity issue was unexpected. But, apparently it’s a big deal here. Australia is ranked #44 in terms of internet connectivity. Have fun in Europe!! Safe travels.
