In the midst of burning out in a spectacular way last year I had to make decisions about “what’s next.” This was a difficult question to reflect on because I had spent so many years in my previous field.
What Was I Doing Before?
I was a high level administrator at a university for a English as a Second Language program. I was tasked with the following:
- Processing immigration documents
- Working on admissions
- Maintaining immigration records
- Running immigration information sessions
- Working with embassies
- Working with international scholarship programs
- Event planning (at the peak I was running around 70 small-large scale events a year)
- Managing student assistants
- Training new colleagues
- Email management-Answered questions from current and incoming students regarding program logistics
- Crisis management-Serious stuff happens with students
I was tasked with other duties-but I don’t want to bore you.
So, it was not a surprise when I burnt out in a flaming blaze of glory. Did I mention that I was working on site with around 250+ students at any given time? Not including incoming students for the next session.
The great thing about a job like the one that I had is that it has prepared me well for my newest endeavor:
Skipping In the Clouds Virtual Assistant
and
Social Media Services
After spending 10 years working with hundreds of people at any given time I decided to serve a different clientele in a different way. I am now my own boss and so far I am a hard task-master!
My Business Model
I am contracting with small businesses/non-profits/ and other bloggers on the following:
- One Time Projects
- On-going Monthly Projects
- Email Management
- Blog Management
- Event planning
- Blog Posts
- Ghost Writing
- Social Media Management
- Streamlining internal processes
- And whatever else we decide
Why?
I want to serve a small number of clients and offer the best service and support possible! I strongly believe in small local businesses and actively seek out local goods and services. If you’ve read my blog you know that I am quite passionate about this and will transfer my ability to work hard with my passion to rock whatever projects I work on for you. And, I never want to work with so many people that I feel that their service is compromised.
Why Skipping in The Clouds?
Because I am excited to be able to work virtually, flying place to place. Lifestyle design baby.

Wow, I can see how your old job was probably very rewarding at times, and very stressful. Best of luck with your new endeavors!
In the beginning I really, really loved it. But, the stress was very overwhelming and I had to move on. Thanks a lot for your support!
Sounds like a fabulous change of pace for you! I think it’s awesome that you’re working for yourself now. Managing your own schedule, location, and projects… sounds ideal!
I will work just as hard-but with fewer people and more flexibility. I will keep you posted on how it goes 🙂
10 years! wow Michelle. I’d would refer you if there’s someone in need of such services. Love the business model of yours. Good luck!
10 freaking years! That’s why I burnt out so badly. Thanks Jayson 🙂
