I was so freaking nervous. I was about to send out an invoice for the largest piece of freelancing work that I’ve ever done. Never mind that I really enjoyed the project, that I conducted interviews, edited it for over an hour, and did research….the amount I was charging my client was the most I’ve ever charged. And, I was a little freaked out. Who was I to charge so much? Imposter Syndrome was rearing its ugly head and I had to push through. In fact, I’ve worked on projects for this client for the past year and they’re fabulous! But, this project was almost 5 times the scope of work that I normally did and the project coincided with the fact that I was going to raise my rates anyway. As I worked through that invoice I had to push through my doubts and I sent the invoice. The client didn’t email and yell at me, or wonder why I was charging so much. In fact, nothing happened other than me drawing a line in the sand and being clear to myself and my clients about how much I’m worth. Let’s face it, I’m awesome.

Being Bold
This year I’m really focused on being bold and unapologetically going after what I want. And, that is closely tied to making more money. It’s with some bemusement that I recognize that I’ve finally broken through a mindset issue that I’ve struggled with for years: earning more money. The thing is when you make that mental shift you also begin shifting your process.
Being bold is taking ownership of your vision for yourself and going after it. Ruthlessly. Taking no prisoners and doing the work. Because, let’s face it, there is a lot of work involved in owning your vision for your life.
During this year as I focus on growing my business, staying close to home and implementing I’ve discovered a couple of things.
- People may get confused about your intentions-The other day a friend of mine (who has been pestering me to attend an event) mentioned that I was telling everyone not to travel. I have to admit that I was super confused. They were referring to the fact that I’m not attending FinCon or Podcast Movement this year (two of my favorite events to attend during the year). In that moment I realized that intention is very easy to confuse via the internet. Let’s be clear-I’m ALWAYS pro traveling. But, for me this year is all about growing my business. I just wasn’t going to attend another FinCon, etc. not having achieved my financial goals (or, getting pretty freaking close to them). I’ll see you next year. This year I’m pro GROW MY MONEY.
- Sacrifices Don’t Feel Like Sacrifices-This past weekend I missed out on the Lola Retreat the my friend Melanie Lockert and Emma Pattee created. It was in NYC one of my favorite cities in the world. And, I stayed home. Because, this year that’s just what has to happen. And, at the end of this week I will be missing out on a business retreat (also in New York State) because I need to stay home and focus. Fortunately for me, one of the business retreat founders stopped through Denver last week and she very kindly answered several questions for me that will help me grow my business. Things always work out.
- Sustained Action-Creates consistent results and the Universe is no longer confused by what you’re doing. In fact, it’s amazing to see how my numbers have been slowly climbing up. Something that I’ve been frustrated with for awhile.
- More social media followers
- More passive income (it’s not where I want it to be, but, it’s more than before.
- More podcast downloads
- Higher paying freelance projects
- Closed Facebook group is growing. If you’re an entrepreneur needing help with networking check out my group The Unapologetically Money Hungry. I bring in special guests during the month, share resources, and encourage members as they grow their businesses.
Creating Opportunities
To get paid and grow my skill set is something that I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on. One of the areas of focus from my old job that I’ve found myself missing was event planning. Now, let’s be clear, I don’t miss planning 80+ events a year. But, I missed thinking up, managing, and sharing events that connect people…in person.
And, I’ve really wanted to work with brands and have spent the last year trying to figure out a way to marry all of my interests together so that I could do that. I’m pleased to say that Friday, May 4th, 2018 is the launch of my first event being held in Denver. It’s a monthly event specifically geared towards helping new Denver residents and current residents connect with local resources, people, and products. Sometimes you have to create an event that helps get you in front of the people you would like to work with. That’s what I’ve done and now I’m in sponsor pitch mode. Because, I need to get paid LOL! But, I’m really excited about this event and people have been signing up. If I were running around, it would have been difficult for me to focus on creating this event.
Pushing through the Fear
Of being bold, of asking for more, and bring my business vision has been really scary. I’ve asked myself what if I fail? What if I’m being too audacious? Who’s going to be interested in what I’m doing? Who’s going to pay for what I’m doing?
Then, I get over myself and push through. It’s cary and I do it anyway,
