Please note: In a nod to Sophie Amoruso’s inspirational story and bad ass book I decided to a series on #GirlBoss’s who inspire me. I am a little behind on this series…As I was hoping to start in January. Ahem. So I will highlight 2 ladies in April and will be back on track.
This month’s #GirlBoss is not a girl, she is a grown a@@ woman who hails from South Central L.A. an area that I cannot imagine growing up in as it is the complete opposite of where I’m from. I discovered this woman via an unlikely source-a Taiwanese Australian friend who posted a snippiet of this woman’s appearance on the Steve Harvey show. Her words so moved me that I cried. Her name is Lisa Nichols, motivational speaker and all around bad ass. I would like for you to watch a clip of her before we go any further.
#GirlBoss Series: Lisa Nichols
Please note: it’s about 6 minutes and 25 seconds. It’s worth every moment.
Ok, wipe your tears. I can’t believe that I didn’t know about her until a week ago! I love listening to motivational speakers and I always find that just when I’m feeling a little bit down I hear something amazing. This is exactly what happened when I stumbled upon Lisa’s interview. I loved that she was clearly 100% herself and she had an authenticity that really resonated with me.
So, I set about researching her and discovered some amazing information about Lisa Nichols. I found the following facts on her website!
- She is CEO of Motivating The Masses
- She was on public assistance as a young, single parent
- She is a study in persistence
- She works her vision for her life
As I poked around her website I l learned a lot to apply to my life without even taking one of her courses (which I am looking into).
- Surround yourself with a good team-In terms of business, have a strong team of people who believe in what you’re doing and will tell you the truth when things aren’t going well. You can’t do everything-pick people who have strengths that you don’t.
- Innovate and continuously meet the needs of your audience. Perhaps what you’ve been doing before is no longer “fresh” and it’s time to rethink: your life, a business concept, etc. This has the potential to be a healthy and positive process of growth.
- Anticipate people’s needs. She has included downloadable photos that people (other websites bloggers) could download and use in posts. I like this because I don’t have to worry about copyright issues and she’s smart-it helps her to advertise her business.
- Love what you do-It is obvious to me that Ms. Nichols loves what she does and that she is speaking from her heart. I can’t wait to listen to more of her talks.
Ultimately, I love that Lisa Nichols rescued herself. And that is what resonated with me the most about her story. She tried, and tried, and tried again.
I feel like a slacker.
Time to rethink my process.

Oh, what a great idea for a series! This is going to be very motivational. Thank you for sharing Lisa Nicols with me; I hadn’t heard of her before, but now I’m all motivated this morning! (I couldn’t watch the video without headphones because of a sleeping baby nearby, but I love a good rags to riches story, and it puts my life in perspective).

Isn’t she great?! I wanted to do a series with people that aren’t as obvious-so, sorry Oprah, you probably won’t make the list LOL! We already know her story. Lisa Nichols is awesome and I’m so happy that I discovered her.

Loved reading #Girlboss, love this idea Michelle! Wow, that video was truly inspiring. She’s amazing for getting herself out from under and starting a biz to help so many other people. This is what I’m lacking in my day to day and it makes me crazy to no end. I’m at the same point that she was, this is my life and I’m going to do whatever I can to be an amazing woman and help as many people as I can. Too many years of settling and self-doubt have made me angry. LOL!

You can tell I don’t watch talkshows AT ALL because I’ve never heard of this dude. Seriously, other than Oprah I don’t think I could name a single one!
