At the moment that I am writing this post it is still officially freaking cold here. The weather is supposed to warm up substantially by the end of the week and I can’t wait! This weekend I decided that it was time to freshen up my wardrobe because…summer is coming. I think? With thoughts of summer in my head I decided to look for some summer trends over the weekend to add to my wardrobe. If you’re thinking about how to get fashion ready for summer 2016 it won’t be too hard.
#Disappointed
Memo to fashion designers-I don’t want to wear burgundies in summer, or muted earthy tones. I want to wear bright oranges, deep sea blues that remind me of the sky, crisp white, and rich greens. Nope, basically none of that. I went to several stores and looked online. No luck. I had to change my approach for summer fashion.
How to Get Fashion Ready for Summer 2016
First, pull out all of your warm weather clothing and check the condition of the clothing, the fit, and how you feel in each item. Give away what doesn’t fit well, makes you feel less than your best, and is seriously out off trend.
Pick up some magazines (or go online) and look at Summer 2016 fashion trends. Currently I’ve noticed that there are 4 or 5 super easy incredibly affordable trends that you can rock-a lot of them you currently have or can get pretty inexpensively. Here are my favorites!
- Flats!-They can be either slip on mules, gladiator shoes, or flats with an adorable lace up detail. Super comfortable, dress up any simple outfit!
- Off the shoulder blouses-Saucy!! Clearly, they aren’t appropriate for work. But, incredibly appropriate for happy hour, date nights, roaming around town, and just looking a bit cute and saucy.
- Boho Chic–Emphasis on chic. I feel like the fashion for this summer is relaxed (of course) but a lot crisper than before (thank goodness)
It seems like the emphasis is on details. A beautiful detailed purse that pops out from a plain well crafted outfit. Saucy shoes that pick up a simple pair of jeans with a sexy top. Aviator glasses and a slightly messy bun. All looks that are super simple, super easy to pull off with items that may already be in your home. If you find that you need to pic up a couple of items I have a couple of ideas.
ThredUp.com
Is my bae. I love thredUP* which is an online consignment store with a great user experience, very nice merchandise, and a fantastic user experience-items arrived wrapped in tissue paper. In fact, as a result of my thredUP* love I have seriously killed my expensive shopping habit. I now spend less than $500 a year on clothes and I get complements all the time. Click here for more details on ThredUp.
The other great thing about thredUP is their “Closet Clean Out.” You can send in clothes that meet the standards for Thredup. They have a list of clothing components that they are always on the look out for.
Clothing Swap
Get some friends together, grab a bottle of wine and some appetizers and do a clothing swap. Just make it clear what people should or shouldn’t bring to the party. Don’t be too stressed about hosting a clothing swap. Just make sure that the group is large enough to bring in a nice variety of clothing/accessories/etc.
Local Thrift Stores
There is a Goodwill in my town that I call “Magical Goodwill.” It feels like every time I walk in the item that I’m looking for is there. I was looking for a white jacket specifically from Express-found one! Needed a cute little dress-found one! I’ve even found some great pairs of shoes there as well. If you purchase shoes do make sure to spray disinfectant in them. I usually get a cotton ball and dab rubbing alcohol on the soles.
Local thrift stores are great because they will carry clothing that is “on trend” for the area that you live in.
Wear What You Have
And commit to just 1-3 items for this year. Heck, it still might be too cold in your town to even think about wearing summer clothing. I always wish for a long summer season but already it’s looking like this year we will have a shorter season than usual.

Great tips and resources! I purchased a few dresses to wear this summer along with 2 new pairs of shorts. I’m a bit short on tops though but I’ll just probably browse the consignment shops or see if I can find any online deals for the remainder of the season.

I was seriously underwhelmed by this season’s fashion. I liked the shoes but you really don’t need to invest in too many pieces this summer. I bought 2 pairs of shoes for a whopping $35 bucks..and a skirt. I would like to buy a couple of pretty blouses but I’m going to wait for the sales.
